07.01.2018
On the 6th of January, Malta Red Cross volunteers, Rita Fenech and Ignazio Pullara were both recognized for going above and beyond their call of duty.
In the early hours of the 12th of August, whilst transporting an elderly lady home to Mellieha, a car being driven in the opposite direction collided head on with the ambulance injuring the Malta Red Cross crew. Despite their injuries, both volunteers continued to treat the other wounded until the arrival of medical staff from Mater Dei Hospital.
Dr. Jonathan Joslin, Casualty Department Consultant, and Dr. Michael Spiteri, Clinical Lead of the Emergency Department, presented the ABCD award on behalf of the Mater Dei Hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department]. During the presentation, both doctors explained that this was the first time this award was being presented.
Mr. Edward Gruppetta and Ms. Paulette Fenech, President and Director General of Malta Red Cross respectively, presented both volunteers with the Malta Red Cross Achievement Award on behalf of the Society.
