- Paqpaqli ghall-Istrina Incident
25.01.2016
For the past 10 years, Malta Red Cross volunteers have provided ambulance and medical services during the Annual Paqpaqli ghall-Istrina event in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund. The event takes place at the Malta International Airport in Hal Farrug each year.
A serious accident occurred at this year’s event, when a Porsche 918 supercar lost control and careered into the crowd, seriously injuring 27 spectators.
Malta Red Cross volunteers responded immediately and together with the staff from the Mater Dei Hospital Emergency Department, AFM, CPD, and Malta Police Force assisted the injured.
In a statement following the incident, The Parliamentary Secretary for Health, the Hon. Chris Fearne thanked the Malta Red Cross volunteers for their prompt action which saved many lives.
The Director General, the Director of Operations and the Interim President of the Society also thanked the volunteers and offered any assistance, psychological or otherwise, to anyone who had witnessed the accident.
