Emergency services involved in cruise liner power failure simulation exercise

29.02.2016

Malta’s emergency services are currently holding a preparedness exercise at Golden Bay, simulating a cruise liner power failure scenario. The simulation intends to replicate a real life incident when a cruise liner with 4,200 passengers, became stranded in the Gulf of Mexico in 2013.

The exercise, involving over 150 people, began last Saturday when the first call for assistance was received.

Robert Brincau, Malta Red Cross Head of Operations, explained that the simulation requires most of the volunteer teams to effectively deal with the emergency.

“It is our pleasure to work alongside the professional Mater Dei Hospital team and MMSA. Apart from the continuous training exercises held throughout the year, Malta Red Cross Volunteers are also trained in working with other entities to provide the best possible care on site. Such simulation exercises are important for all of us to refine plans and make the best use of the assets we have.”

The public are advised not to be alarmed at the sight of the ambulance fleet and other vehicles used by First Responders on the site.
